Combination and integration of standards

Combination and integration of standards

We are at home in many different market segments and feel comfortable in niches. We therefore offer a large number of technology standards in the broad area of automation and its neighbouring technical areas. By appropriately combining different standards, we refine them, increase their useful value and integrate them as Saia-Burgess system standards in our Saia® PCD products.

We deliberately refrain from developing and distributing proprietary technologies and standards.

Our Saia® NT.OS PCD operating system has – like Windows® – a modular component-based architecture. These components can be operated in parallel, independently of each other. To do this, we have adopted techniques from the mobile phone industry, collaborating with Philips and Nokia, which allow parts of the firmware (C code) to be exchanged in runtime across a communications connection and initialized without switching off the device. To use this automation environment, we did not choose a wireless section as the communications path, but Profibus, RS 485 and Ethernet.

This made intelligent Saia® PCD remote I/O stations, etc. the ideal equipment for the Lötschberg tunnel in Switzerland. 1.470 Saia® PCD remote I/O stations are installed there. The combination of technologies described allows the entire firmware of all Saia® PCD remote I/O stations to be updated across the network conveniently and without difficulty. No service engineer has to spend months in the tunnel with a screwdriver.
