Energy efficiency and the associated reduction of CO2 emissions have now also become a core issue in automation. With its S-Energy system, Saia-Burgess has translated this issue into industrial, technical solutions for end customers, machine builders and system integrators.

The heart of the system comprises a control device that has been designed as an Energy Manager. Mono-phase and three-phase, bus-coupled electric energy meters up to 6000 A provide the system output. Both types have been developed and produced by Saia-Burgess itself.

The Energy Manager has a 5.7“ TFT display that can be run in VGA and ¼ VGA mode. For communications, Ethernet, USB and 2x RS485 interfaces are on board as standard. The device also has a real-time clock, an SD card slot and a battery.

For end customers, the Energy Manager can be used immediately, without programming knowledge or software engineering. Any energy meters connected are automatically logged in under the set-up menu. Energy logging, the visualization application and the data storage application are immediately operational. History data, current data (CSV/Excel files) and web visualization can be accessed from anywhere with the integral AutomationServer (www.saia-pcd.com/automationserver) using FTP and HTTP.

If required, system integrators can extend and build on the Energy Manager’s pre-installed visualization and control application with the SaiaPCD Web-Editor software tool (from version 5.14). They can directly access data and states logged in the Energy Manager via a controller and/or PC.

Machine builders and device engineers can even let logic proceed in the Energy Manager and expand controller tasks via remote I/Os. This is achieved by simply activating the STEP7 function in the Energy Manager’s set-up menu. Immediately, 2048 flags, 256 FCs, 256 FBs and 512 DBs will become available as resources, so that even the most unusual energy management tasks can be realized as an integral part of the overall controller. Since Saia energy meters supply detailed information on every phase, such a system will enable efficiency optimization not only with regard to energy, but also maintenance and productivity. Up to 254 Saia energy meters can be connected to the system.
